Although bass will often take mayflies, hoppers, and beetles, I’ve never had any success using the smaller flies that often make for successful trout fishing. Both largemouth and smallmouth tend to like showy, splashy, even noisy offerings. In the following sections you’ll find some of the basic types of flies you can use. These flies go by many names, and for some reason their names go from good ol’ boy silly to outright groanworthy puns. Don’t feel constrained by this list. Take them more as an example of the kinds of flies that have proven to catch bass wherever I have found them.
